On September 9, a series of events celebrating the 10th anniversary of China–Europe collaboration—including the Academic Exchange Meeting and Inauguration Ceremony of the Cytovation R&D Center, the Second Academic Committee/Council Meeting of the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Brain Health and Functional Reconstruction, and the Third China–Europe Summit Forum on Basic and Translational Research in Glioma—was held at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University.
Zhu Enyuan, Deputy Director-General of the Shandong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Yi Fan, Vice President of Shandong University, delivered remarks via video. Chen Yuguo, President of Qilu Hospital, and Li Xingang, Director of the Institute for Brain and Brain-Inspired Sciences, attended the meeting and delivered speeches.
Ma Qiang, Director of the Science and Education Department of the Shandong Provincial Health Commission, and Han Hui, Vice President of Qilu Hospital, were also present. The ceremony was chaired by Cheng Yufeng, Vice President of Qilu Hospital. More than 100 experts, scholars, and graduate students from Norway, Australia, and across China gathered to celebrate a decade of cooperation and to envision the next ten years.
The series of events focused on brain health and glioma research, covering basic science, clinical translation, and international collaboration, injecting new momentum into the development of these fields. Attendees also included Si Meng, Director of the Administrative Affairs Office of Qilu Hospital; Zhang Dong, Director of Human Resources Department; Yang Xiaoyun, Director of Science and Technology Management Department; Lyu Ming, Director of Education Department; and Chen Teng, Director of International Affairs Office.

Deputy Director-General Zhu Enyuan congratulated the successful inauguration of the Cytovation R&D Center and highlighted Shandong Province’s achievements in technological innovation and its evolving international cooperation landscape, expressing hopes that more scientific outcomes would take root locally.

Vice President Yi Fan remarked that after a decade of collaboration, the establishment of the Cytovation R&D Center marked a milestone, one that will accelerate clinical translation and innovation in brain science.

President Chen Yuguo noted that Qilu Hospital and the University of Bergen have spent the past ten years advancing neuroscience together, and that the launch of the Cytovation R&D Center signifies a deepening of China–Europe medical cooperation from academic exchange to comprehensive integration.

Director Li Xingang reviewed the history of Sino-Norwegian cooperation and platform development, emphasizing that the Cytovation R&D Center—built to international standards—will further strengthen bilateral collaboration, advance translational research in major brain diseases, and bring new hope to patients.
During the opening ceremony, Vice President Han Hui presented the Outstanding Contribution Award for International Cooperation to Professor Rolf Bjerkvig, recognizing his decade-long dedication to advancing bilateral scientific research and industrialization.
Representatives from both China and Norway—Han Hui, Zhang Dong, Wang Donghai (Director of Neurosurgery), Stein-Christian Mohn (CEO of Mohn Drilling AS), Lars Prestegarden (CEO of Cytovation), and Federico Gerardo Grego Mayor (COO & CFO of Cytovation)—jointly unveiled the R&D Center. Lars Prestegarden and Zhao Guang’ai then signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of Cytovation and Hehong Capital.

The keynote session, held via video conference, centered on “Data-Driven Strategies for Novel Glioma Treatments,” demonstrating how integrated multi-omics models can reshape individualized radiotherapy and chemotherapy decision-making after surgery.
Lars Prestegarden delivered a talk titled “From Undruggable to Clinically Actionable,” presenting Nordic experience in using AI-based algorithms to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets. Professor Rolf Bjerkvig offered an in-depth explanation of the dynamic pathophysiology of the blood–brain barrier during tumor progression and proposed a new concept of “barrier normalization” combined with immunotherapy.
Professor Wang Xiuying discussed the potential of multimodal AI for the early detection of neurodegenerative and neoplastic diseases.

The second meeting of the Academic Committee/Council of the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Brain Health and Functional Reconstruction followed, chaired by Professor Wang Donghai.
Professor Li Gang from the Neurosurgery Department of Qilu Hospital presented updates on laboratory development. Committee members and council representatives held in-depth discussions on platform upgrading, talent cultivation, and industry linkage, and formulated key priorities for the next stage. All laboratory personnel attended the meeting.

On the afternoon of September 9, the Third China–Europe Summit Forum on Basic and Translational Research in Glioma was held. Professor Li Gang and Professor Kang Chunsheng of Tianjin Medical University delivered welcome remarks.
The first session, chaired by Professor Xue Hao and Researcher Chen Anjing of Qilu Hospital Neurosurgery, featured original findings by: Wang Yuan, Sichuan University — on astrocytic microenvironment energy supply; Wang Qianghu, Nanjing Medical University — on iron metabolism–driven malignant progression; and Zhao Linju, West China Hospital, Sichuan University — on emotional-stress–mediated brain–bone marrow interaction.
The second session, chaired by Associate Researcher Huang Bin and Researcher Zhang Di, included talks by: Qian Xu, Nanjing Medical University — on iron homeostasis and therapy resistance; Xie Qi, Westlake University — on mechanisms of cancer immune regulation; and Shi Yu, Southwest Hospital, Chongqing — on macrophage remodeling for therapeutic enhancement
The third session, chaired by Han Mingzhi and Guo Xing of Qilu Hospital Neurosurgery, included presentations by: Cheng Quan, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University — on hyperlipidemia-driven tumor-promoting mechanisms; Yang Yuan, West China Hospital — on individual brain function–tumor boundary mapping; and Cheng Ye, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University — on the clinical value of multi-center FET-PET–guided resections
Professor Kang Chunsheng concluded the forum by calling on both Chinese and European partners to use the newly launched Cytovation R&D Center as a hub to build a full “basic–clinical–industry” innovation pipeline, bringing more benefits to patients worldwide.

The successful completion of the 10th anniversary events marks a new stage of coordinated government–industry–academia–research collaboration in Shandong Province in the fields of brain health and neuro-oncology. It signifies the province’s strengthened international momentum and elevated starting point in high-end medical innovation, bringing renewed hope to patients with brain and neurological tumors.
